The stages

The stages of menopause in Atlanta, and where you are

Which stage you are in changes what your symptoms mean, what testing is worth doing and how hormone therapy is prescribed. It is the first thing we work out. Assessed the same way for every Atlanta patient.

Why the stage matters

Atlanta care by stage: the same symptom means different things

Perimenopause is not a milder version of menopause, and the difference shows up first in how little a single blood test proves in Atlanta. In perimenopause hormone levels are not low, they are erratic. Estrogen can run higher than it ever did in your thirties one week and drop sharply the next. That is why a single blood test at this stage tells you so little.

After menopause, levels are consistently low rather than swinging. Testing becomes more informative, symptoms become more stable, and the reason for treating shifts from controlling fluctuation to replacing what is no longer being made.

Early and surgical menopause sit apart from both. A woman who loses ovarian function at 38 faces a much longer stretch of low estrogen, and the treatment calculation changes accordingly. More on that in early and surgical menopause, hair and skin changes and menopause symptoms go further into it. Age at onset changes the arithmetic, so a Atlanta woman who lost ovarian function in her thirties is not facing the same decision as one who reached it later.

Working it out

How your Atlanta assessment works

  1. Cycle history

When your periods changed, how they changed and when the last one was. This single question does most of the work.

  2. Symptom pattern

Erratic symptoms that come and go point to perimenopause. Steady symptoms more often mean the transition has finished.

  3. Surgical and medical history

Hysterectomy, ovary removal, chemotherapy and certain cancer treatments all change the timeline and sometimes remove the usual marker entirely.

  4. Age against the average

The average age of menopause is 51. Arriving well before that is worth investigating rather than accepting.

Common questions

Atlanta menopause stage questions, answered

Answered the way a clinician would answer them, not the way a brochure would.

Perimenopause is the transition, when hormone levels swing and cycles become unpredictable. It commonly lasts four to eight years. Menopause itself is a single point in time, defined as twelve consecutive months with no period. Everything after that is postmenopause.
Most often in the early to mid forties, though it can begin in the late thirties. The first sign is usually a change in the cycle rather than a hot flash: periods becoming shorter, heavier, lighter or simply less predictable than they have been.
Periods stopping before age 45 is early menopause; before 40 it is called premature ovarian insufficiency. Both usually warrant hormone therapy through to the average age of menopause, because a longer stretch of low estrogen carries its own risks for bone and heart health.
It tends to arrive harder. When both ovaries are removed, estrogen falls within hours rather than over years, so symptoms often start within days and are more intense. Hormone therapy is usually recommended unless there is a specific reason to avoid it.
Yes, until you have gone a full twelve months without a period. Fertility is much lower but it is not zero, and hormone therapy is not a contraceptive. If you need contraception, that is a separate conversation to have at the same appointment.

Patient reviews

Atlanta patients on their hormone therapy

★★★★★

I had been waking three or four times a night for two years and had been told it was just stress. The consultation actually went through my cycle history. Six weeks on a patch and I am sleeping through.

What I wanted was someone who would talk about the risks honestly rather than sell me something. They walked through the clot data and why a patch suited me better than tablets.

Marguerite O.

★★★★★

The brain fog was the part nobody warned me about. Having a clinician tell me it was a recognized symptom and not early dementia was worth the appointment on its own.

Denise W.

It took two dose changes before things settled, which they had told me upfront might happen. The three-month review was booked before I left the first appointment.

Find out which stage you are actually in in Atlanta

Bring your cycle history, even roughly. When things changed and when the last period was will place you on the timeline faster than any blood test can.

Consultations are by appointment. Prescriptions are issued only where clinically appropriate.
